Ozone — A Weapon in the Fight Against the Coronavirus
As the US continues its battle to contain COVID-19, one issue that will need to be dealt with is how to quickly and safely purify the air in rooms or buildings that have been exposed to the coronavirus. It is widely suspected that the Coronavirus can linger and spread through the air via water droplets after an infected person coughs or sneezes. Even the most thorough cleaning of surfaces won’t remove airborne viruses, and venting the air simply moves them somewhere else. What is needed is a safe way to neutralize the coronavirus while it is still airborne.
Fortunately, there is a strong candidate for that role: ozone generation.
Ozone is a gas whose molecules are composed of three oxygen atoms. (Chemists use the symbol O3 for ozone.) Ordinary oxygen tends to bind chemically in pairs (O2) and nearly all of the oxygen in the air we breathe is in this O2 form, but it is fairly easy to create ozone in significant quantities. Electrical discharges like arcs or lightning strikes will often create ozone, so the scent is often associated with places where strong electrical currents are present. For instance, ozone is often encountered in subways, where trains pick up power from a “third rail” that carries a powerful electrical current.
Ozone is very active chemically and useful as an aerial disinfectant. Ozone molecules react with chemicals on the exteriors of cells and viruses, breaking them down and killing them. Hospitals sometimes use ozone to disinfect surgical rooms. Numerous studies showed that ozone disinfection was useful against the virus that caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in late 2002 and early 2003. Like COVID-19, SARS was caused by a coronavirus.
There are some disadvantages to using ozone, but also some important advantages. Just as ozone is fatal to microbes, high concentrations of ozone are dangerous to humans. It irritates the eyes and nose and can cause damage to the lungs. Ozone molecules break down fairly quickly on their own so it cannot be stored and shipped; it needs to be generated on site.
The good news is that when ozone molecules do break down, they turn back into O2 molecules — regular, breathable oxygen — so ozone can be deployed without worries about how to dispose of waste.
A typical ozone disinfection will begin with the room cleared of personnel and any sensitive equipment, and then sealed. Then an ozone generator will be activated and allowed to run until there is enough ozone in the air for it to be effective, at which point the generator is turned off and the room can be ventilated.
COVID-19 is a dangerous disease, highly contagious and potentially fatal to all who are infected, especially the aged and infirm. Hospitals and medical offices will need to develop countermeasures so that rooms where COVID-19 patients have been examined and treated can be used safely. Ozone generation uses proven technology that is already found in many hospitals and is safe when used properly. This method of removing coronavirus from the air should be examined further and adopted quickly if tests verify its effectiveness.

In past studies, 99 percent of viruses have been destroyed and showed damage to their envelope proteins after 30 seconds of exposure to ozone. This can result in the virus’s failure to attach to normal, healthy cells, and the breakdown of the single-stranded RNA can lead to the destruction of the virus.
